What requirements should a washing machine cabinet meet?

A good laundry cabinet does more than just conceal your appliances. It's safe, quiet, practical, and designed for humid environments. This guide explains exactly what a laundry cabinet should meet, including ventilation requirements, load-bearing capacity, dimensions, and material selection. This way, you can prevent damage, noise, and unnecessary wear and tear, and organize your laundry room efficiently.

Safety and ventilation: open or closed cabinet?

Ventilation is essential for a safe and durable washing machine cabinet. Both washing machines and dryers produce heat and moisture. In a closed cabinet without air intake and exhaust, heat can accumulate and condensation can form, posing a risk of malfunctions, accelerated wear, and, in the worst-case scenario, overheating. Manufacturers and insurers therefore often impose requirements regarding clearance and ventilation openings. Always check your appliance's manual.

A fully open washing machine cabinet provides the best airflow and is the easiest to maintain. If you want a door-style cabinet for a tidy appearance, choose louvered doors or grilles and ensure air intake at the bottom and exhaust at the top; consider closed cabinets if you prioritize safety and moisture protection. An open back wall or ample recesses around appliances promote natural airflow. Don't place flammable materials directly next to or above a dryer, and keep electrical outlets and faucet connections easily accessible. Don't use extension cords in the back of the cabinet, and ensure the plug can be easily unplugged.

Placement: next to each other or on top of each other

Side-by-side installation is stable and ergonomic, with space for a worktop and storage compartments; a washer and dryer side-by-side (Double Series) also provides extra countertop space. Be sure to leave sufficient side and rear clearance for vibrations and hoses. Stacking saves floor space and places the dryer at a comfortable working height. Choose a stacking arrangement (Stack Series) for the washer and dryer and always stack the dryer on top of the washer using a suitable stacking kit from the manufacturer. Secure the cabinet to the wall and use a safety device if the manufacturer recommends it. Pay attention to ceiling height, door swing, and ensure you can easily reach the dryer's lint filter. Vibrations can be transmitted more strongly in an attic or on a wooden floor. In that case, consider a vibration-dampening base, adjustable feet, and wall anchoring.

Sizing and measuring

Accurate measurements prevent rattling, sliding, and damage. Consider the appliance dimensions and the space required for hoses and plugs. Appliances 60 cm wide and 56-65 cm deep typically require more space for installation due to hoses, drainage, and ventilation. If you only have one machine, a single-appliance washing machine cabinet (Series Only) with minimal width and depth requirements is often sufficient.

  • Rear clearance: 5-10 cm for hoses, plug and airflow.
  • Side clearance: 2-3cm per side to avoid contact during vibration.
  • Stacking height: approx. 175-185 cm total, plus 2-3 cm headroom.
  • Floor area: minimum 65-70 cm depth with closed doors or front.

Also measure the door and walkway clearance, as well as the location of the trap, faucet, and drain. Neatly conceal cables and hoses without kinks, and ensure you can inspect or replace them without disassembling the entire cabinet.

Materials, load-bearing capacity and vibrations

Choose materials that can withstand moisture, impact, and weight. Moisture-resistant chipboard or plywood with a melamine or HPL top layer is low-maintenance. Finish edges with ABS edging and add a water barrier or raised edge to a worktop. Use stainless steel or galvanized screws and sturdy corner anchors. A fully loaded washing machine easily weighs 80-100 kg. Allow for a generous safety margin and let the weight be borne directly by the floor, not by a floating shelf. A steel or solid plinth with adjustable feet helps level the cabinet and dampen vibrations. Anti-vibration mats under the washing machine reduce resonance. Anchor tall cabinet elements to the wall to prevent them from tipping over.

Connections and practical layout

Provide a dedicated grounded electrical outlet for each appliance, within easy reach. Install a water supply with a non-return valve and an easily accessible faucet, preferably with an aquastop. A drip tray with a drain provides additional safety. Position the siphon so that hoses don't kink and maintenance remains easy. When designing the layout, consider pull-out shelves for laundry baskets, enclosed compartments for detergents, and a hook or niche for an ironing board and drying rack. Frequently Asked Questions

Can you install any washing machine?

Not every washing machine is suitable for conversion. Always follow the instructions. As long as you ensure ventilation, clearance, load-bearing capacity, and accessibility, a standard freestanding washing machine can easily fit in a washing machine cabinet.

Can you place a washing machine behind a cupboard door?

Yes, provided you provide adequate ventilation. Use louvered doors or ventilation grilles, leave the back wall partially open, and maintain at least 5-10 cm of space behind the appliance. Make sure you can reach the tap, plug, and emergency stop.

Can a washing machine be placed in a closed cupboard?

A completely sealed cabinet without air vents is not recommended. Heat and moisture must be able to escape to prevent malfunctions and wear. Always provide air intake at the bottom and exhaust at the top, or choose an open cabinet.

What should you pay attention to when buying a washing machine?

Besides load capacity and energy consumption, consider the dimensions, vibration levels, and the required clearance behind and next to the appliance. This will determine whether the washing machine fits well in your cabinet and space.
